Orthodontics Santa Pola

The purpose of orthodontic treatments is to achieve the most suitable bone base for a better fit of the teeth, to improve the function of the jaws, and of course, to align the teeth for aesthetic purposes and to show off a perfect smile.

The most common is fixed orthodontics, or removable aligners, or even a combination of several of these treatments.

Before deciding on the treatment plan, the patient should have a dental CBCT or CT scan, or other radiological tests, which may need to be repeated throughout the treatment.

The treatment plan and its duration varies from case to case.

Once the active treatment has been completed, a retention period is respected to ensure that there is no recurrence of the initial defect, which is entirely predictable if the patient is consistent in his or her maintenance check-ups.

During treatment, more serious complications may appear that you should be aware of:

– Poor hygiene can lead to dental caries or gingivitis. Therefore, the continued lack of cooperation by the patient in this respect justifies the unilateral interruption of the treatment by the dentist.

– In very rare cases, it can lead to root resorption and force the treatment plan to be changed or discontinued.

– Also, although rare, problems in the temporomandibular joint (clicking, blockage of opening or closing of the mouth, pain in front of the ear, etc.) may occur coincident with orthodontic treatment, especially if there is previous joint pathology or certain craniofacial growth patterns.

– If you are a smoker, you should be aware that you will produce less saliva and will be at greater risk of caries and, above all, periodontal disease. We insist on recommending that you stop smoking, for which we offer you express support and help to quit.
