Dental Caps Santa Pola

These are complete or partial coverings of the tooth surface. They are made to measure, after the dentist has drilled the teeth and obtained a mould of the supporting tooth axis. They are then permanently cemented in place.

They can be made of zirconium or metal ceramics:

1. Aesthetics

Zirconium: Zirconium crowns are highly aesthetic, as the material is white, translucent and looks very similar to the natural tooth. This makes them ideal for front teeth or more visible areas where appearance is key.

Metalceramic: These crowns combine a metal core with a ceramic layer on the surface. Although the ceramic resembles the natural tooth, the metal core can make the crown look less natural in some cases, especially if the gums recede and reveal a dark ridge at the base.

2. Strength and durability

Zirconium: Zirconium is a very strong material, resistant to fracture and corrosion. This makes them durable, although in some cases zirconia can be a little stiffer than other materials, which could affect opposing teeth in people who tend to clench or grind their teeth.

Metalceramic: The combination of metal and ceramic also offers good strength and durability. However, over time, the ceramic on the surface may wear down or break, which could expose the metal core in cases of extreme wear.

3. Biological compatibility

Zirconium: It is highly biocompatible, which means it is less likely to cause adverse reactions or allergies. In addition, zirconia is metal-free, so there is no risk of corrosion in the mouth and it is less likely to cause soft tissue irritation.

Metalceramic: Some people may experience sensitivity or reaction to metal in the crown, although this is rare. In addition, the presence of metal may slightly increase the risk of unfavourable gum reaction, especially in predisposed individuals.

4. Price

Zirconium: They are usually more expensive due to the aesthetic and biocompatible properties. The manufacturing process for zirconia crowns is also usually more complex and requires advanced technology, which increases the cost.

Metalceramic: Generally, these crowns are less expensive than zirconia, making them a popular and economical choice, especially for posterior teeth where aesthetics are not as crucial.
